Scottish Independence
The Scottish Socialist Party supports Scottish Independence. It has done so since its inception back in 1998.
With independence, we can escape from endless cuts, never ending austerity and we won’t have to live under Tory rule ever again. The SSP fought hard for independence in 2014 mobilising and convincing thousands of Scotland’s working class majority to vote Yes. We are ready to do it again.
We seek an independent socialist Scotland – a modern democratic republic.
Our case is a democratic one – based on the rights of nations to self-determination, and a view that the powers of independence can be used to make millions of working class people in Scotland politically, socially and economically better off.
However, we are not nationalists. Our focus is on how self-government will directly benefit working class people.
Westminster denies economic, social and political rights. As a consequence, all the key decisions about our country are taken by others. We will build a movement like the poll tax which will force the Tories to retreat over their refusal of a Section 30. The idea that a party that hasn’t had a majority in Scotland for over 60 years calls the shots to block a democratic vote is anti-democratic.
Scotland’s political centre of gravity is left of centre. Therefore, a real democracy means the working class majority benefit most from Scottish Independence. We will shake off the chains imposed by a tiny corporate elite based in London, who are unelected, unaccountable and unwanted. Without these, democracy and accountability in Scotland will flourish.

Where now for Scottish Labour?
by John McAllion Since 1918 Labour has fought 28 UK general elections in Scotland. Across the first 25 of those elections, Labour took on average just over half of the seats and 40 per cent of the votes cast. As late as the 2010 general election, Labour was winning 41 of Scotland’s 59 Westminster seats […]
